the largest private art museum in the world

fotografiska announces worldwide expansion to three new locations – berlin, miami and shanghai – by herzog & de meuron, rockwell group and neri & hu respectively. once the expansion is complete, fotografiska will become the largest private art museum in the world by multiple measures. these include the number of locations, the number of exhibits produced per year and the total size of the interior.

each of the new museums will be housed in spectacular contemporary restorations of buildings which are themselves historically and architecturally significant or characteristic of the historic fabric of the neighborhood.

fotografiska’s plans for its shanghai, miami and berlin sites are based on the remarkable architecture of its three existing museums: fotografiska new york is housed in the mission house of the 1894 renaissance-style church. fotografiska tallinn is in a factory building from the 1890s characteristic of the historical fabric of the Estonian region. and fotografiska’s flagship house in Stockholm is an iconic former customs house built in 1906.

fotografiska berlin will feature herzog & de meuron (see more) and studio aisslinger (see more) renovations of the former tacheles kunsthaus, built in 1908. the project is located in the mitte district of the city. a pyramidal roof extension by herzog & de meuron will redefine the building’s silhouette and provide a contemporary lighthouse, while studio aisslinger’s interior renovation will pay homage to the building, the fotografiska brand and the history of the region through a respectful preservation and thoughtful design incorporating decades of graffiti.

fotografiska miami will be housed in a 1946 factory building renovated by the rockwell band opposite superblue and next to the rubell museum. the project is located in the district of the city of allapattah (a name derived from
Seminole word for alligator). the team will use the rectangular volume of the warehouse as a blank canvas, ‘create a tapestry of layered planes that define paths of discovery, frame views, and create spaces of varying scale and character that visitors can encounter and create their own journeys. ‘

fotografiska shanghai will see neri & hu’s 1931 renovations to a warehouse on the waterfront in suzhou creek, a rapidly developing cultural district unified by a pedestrian promenade. fotografiska shanghai will be housed in one of four historic waterfront warehouses that were built in the early twentieth century as reception centers for goods imported to shanghai from suzhou city. the listed historic building adopts the industrial design of the time, including two magnificent staircases which will be a predominant feature of the site.

this global expansion follows the museum’s merger in early 2021 with the private workspace and social, neuehouse, and the formation of their parent company, cultureworks. the three new venues will each adopt fotografiska’s status as a museum experience for the modern world, combining immersive photography exhibition spaces with an eclectic cultural program, lively restaurants and bars, and thoughtfully curated museum shops.

Josh wyatt, CEO of fotografiska comments:it is a real honor to call these remarkable monuments the dwellings of fotografiska, and we are honored by the opportunity to reimagine such important buildings.

we have been very intentional on our path to global expansion and have carefully identified these cities for their thriving cultural scenes, passion for photography, and forward-thinking attitudes about the future of immersive art experiences. we are delighted to meet our new neighbors and guests. ‘
