The Washington Pavilion is gearing up for exciting upcoming events and exhibits at the Kirby Science Discovery Center and Visual Arts Center museums throughout September. Whether it’s buying one, getting an entrance ticket, a free museum day, or a new traveling exhibit, you can have fun with the family.
Throughout September, the Washington Pavilion is hosting a BOGO – buy one, get FREE promotion on museum admission. Bring a friend and let them enter the Washington Lodge. Offer is only available in person at the Washington Pavilion box office.
On Saturday, September 18, the Kirby Science Discovery Center and the Visual Arts Center will participate in Free Museums Day, sponsored by Sammons Financial Group. This national event, hosted by Smithsonian Magazine, brings together museums, zoos and cultural centers from all 50 states to offer free entry to all ticket holders.
âWe are delighted to have the support of Sammons Financial Group,â said Chelsea Cronin, Director of Development. “Free admission for all on the occasion of National Museum Day is made possible through their sponsorship.”
The fun doesn’t stop there. Kirby Science Discovery Center’s latest temporary exhibit, Bug Squad, also opens on September 18. Created by the Omaha Children’s Museum, this unique set of exhibits is a complete sensory experience with active spaces for play. Each member of the Bug Squad was created to represent a variety of abilities, each with their own unique storyline that describes their super abilities and unique traits. In addition to highlighting strengths or flying abilities, Bug Squad members represent traits such as acceptance, inquiry, team cohesion, and optimism.
The weekend also marks the last opportunity to see the South Dakota Governor’s Biennale at the Visual Arts Center before the exhibit leaves Sioux Falls. The collection includes 66 artists from various backgrounds, from all parts of our state.
âWe have so many exciting things going on in our museums in September,â said Director of Museums Brandon Hanson. âSchool may be back, but we’re not slowing down. We want to continue to offer excellent exhibits, interactive activities and programming to our guests throughout the year.
There is something new to discover every day at the Washington Lodge. These events add to a busy daily activity schedule that includes science demonstrations at Avera Stage Science, Tinker Tuesdays at Jack’s Imagination Lab, and Friday Crafternoons at Raven Children’s Studio. Parents and educators interested in promoting STEAM – science, technology, engineering, art and math – will find plenty of opportunities for learning moments at these events and in museums – and tons of fun, too.
Starting September 7, the Kirby Science Discovery Center and Visual Arts Center will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
